Women’s prisons ‘seen as temporary housing’

Women’s prisons are now seen as stop-gap providers of social care and temporary housing – a refuge for those who have slipped through the net of local services, a new report has claimed.

The Women’s Justice Taskforce, set up last year by the Prison Reform Trust, says closing women’s prisons and putting greater emphasis on health, housing and effective treatment for drugs addiction and mental health issues is needed.
