Founder and Director of Make Justice Work, Roma Hooper, had a letter published in the Guardian today.
“A coherent and sensible approach to sentencing those guilty of drug offences is welcome (Report, 24 January). But our justice system also needs to realise that so much low-level crime is committed by offenders with drug problems. Too often they are given costly and ineffective short prison sentences which do nothing to address the causes of their behaviour. Effective community sentences, which can combine punishment with services such as drug treatment, are cheaper to deliver and more effective at addressing reoffending. Only then will there be fewer victims and less crime” – Roma Hooper.

The evidence is that intensive community sentences reduce reoffending more than short jail sentences. An offender can spend three months doing nothing in prison and cost us £11,000 while for half that they could be on a year-long intensive sentence that forces them to address why they committed the crime. One of the highlights of conference for me was the breakfast roundtable organised by Make Justice Work. As conference goers and fringe organisers will know, getting one MP along is a challenge, managing to attract three must be close to a record! So it was a demonstration of the commitment our party has to reforming the criminal justice system that Justice minister Tom McNally, chair of the Justice Select Committee Alan Beith and member of the Home Affairs Select Committee Julian Huppert, all attended.
